Linux Isn't Just For Grownups Anymore

Wednesday, December 06, 2006 by Salman Siddiqui

Linux is running and who could be better idea to promote it rather than the future of the planet, kids! Its free and its similar when it comes to GUI. That is what the kids look for.
In about a year, through a public school grant program, State of Indiana education officials have moved at least 22,000 students from Windows-based desktops to Linux-based desktops.
Xandros Professional 4 lists for $99, versus anticipated Windows Vista pricing of $199. But Google Docs and OpenOffice are free, Firefox just works, and with Skype for Linux and sites like Meebo.com -- which offers free, web-based instant messaging on all the big services -- communication applications are free and completely available on Linux. (I'm sure there will be a point where I just get my daughter a Skype account instead of letting her tie up the home phone line talking to her friends after school.)
Vista is gonna face bumpy roads ahead!

Microsoft Promises Surprises for Windows Vista Before January

Monday, December 04, 2006 by Salman Siddiqui

“Now that businesses have access to Windows Vista and 2007 Office System, we've only just begun. I've said it before and I'll say it again: when it comes to the consumer market launch of these two products, stay on your toes, as we've got some amazing things in store for you between now and the end of January,” said Nick White, a Product Manager at Microsoft working on the Windows Vista launch team.

“Time is sort of a funny thing,” stated Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. “You need to give new technologies time to incubate before you try to bring them together. Let each technology come to market individually and then do the integration.”
The wait is already been hyped a lot and now the talk of many surprises is gonna make it chillier!

Microsoft Testing a New Home Page

Wednesday, November 22, 2006 by Salman Siddiqui

Microsoft is testing a new homepage and - much to my surprise - it integrates seamlessly with Firefox 2.0. I must confess that I wasn't expecting it. But enough with this. The new homepage has Windows design nuances. In this regard, Microsoft has introduced design changes over a variety of products to synchronize with the visual perspective of its latest OS.

Microsoft a New "Adversary" for Symantec

Sunday, November 19, 2006 by Salman Siddiqui

Symantec, a US$5 billion company and the fourth largest software company in the world, is aiming high. It wants to be a US$10 billion by 2010.

But looks like the new rivals Microsoft is all set to bring it down from being a US$5 Billion company.
Thompson, Symantec CEO, knows that if Microsoft is successful in leveraging Vista to cut Symantec out of the Windows security market, then Symantec can forget about being a US$10 billion company. It will have trouble staying a US$5 billion company.

18 months and 4 seconds of Windows Vista start up sound

Saturday, November 11, 2006 by Salman Siddiqui

Microsoft Corp took 18 months to find the right tune for Windows Vista’s start up sound, and the soft da-dum with a lush fade last a mere 4 seconds. Reminds me of Windows 95’s ’start me up tune’ by Rolling Stones. It was believed that Microsoft paid millions for the right to use rolling stone’s few seconds of tune on Windows 95 - rumors, but this time around, Vista’s tune which took 18 months is definitely a million dollar tune.
