French Parliament migrates to Linux

by Salman Siddiqui

Micro$oft may not be happy at this. After major public institutions and government agencies in France already adopting Linux and Apache on the server side, the government is also giving thought to switching to Linux. This increments on the list of proofs that's GUI of Linux OS's is as good as Windows. May be MS is pouncing on many major IT companies using its fame and power but open source is a "major issue!"

The French government plans to install the Linux operating system on 1,154 desktop computer workstations in its Parliament. Citing "substantial savings despite the migration and training costs," and a desire to avoid too much dependence on a single vendor, the French National Assembly's decision is based largely on the results of a recent study conducted by tech consulting company Atos Origin.
But sometimes Linux migration isn't that easy every time...

Unfortunately, not every Linux migration has a happy ending. The Birmingham City Council in the UK recently terminated its own Linux migration program after deploying the operating system on only 200 of the 1,500 desktop computers initially planned. According to participants in the Birmingham project, the migration failed because the government didn't have enough expertise to establish an effective Linux deployment program. Calling the Birmingham migration "an unbelievable cock-up," NetProject consultant Eddie Bleasdale, who was involved with the project in its early stages, says that the Birmingham government "decided to do it all themselves, without expertise in the area."

Panasonic to Show Your Mood to Everyone

by Salman Siddiqui

Now people will be able to guess if you are talking to your girl friend or to your boss on the phone. Panasonic is planning to show your mood on the front screen of the P720iD clamshell cell phone while you do the talking. They will be doing this with some kind of color codes. Unfortunately you will not be able to see what your mobile is showing to others. Time for some to enjoy and some to "avoid Panasonic".

Considering the fact that the actual displaying of your mood is done after the phone has analyzed the tone and patterns of your voice after beginning a conversation, one is forced to draw the conclusion that he won't be able to see what the “Feel Talk” technology doing all that complex stuff has decided to tell everybody about you because the mentioned LED will be facing outward from your ear. Maybe we don't have the necessary skills to do that or they’ve already thought of this aspect and will leave the user discover what everyone else already saw after the phone call has ended.

Google Shares Set to Fall

Monday, November 27, 2006 by Salman Siddiqui

Spending on research and development, sales and marketing and general and administrative expenses are all expected to outpace revenue growth this year
Giving your hand to everything, trying to be the king, to be the champ is not always easy. The king of internet may see fall in business next year, the weekly financial newspaper Barron's reported Sunday.

Barron's said Google is overvalued because it trades at 37 times next year's expected earnings and because its growth rate is slowing. It also noted that Google now has the 15th largest market capitalization among U.S.-traded shares, and its price-to-earnings ratio is two to three times higher that of similarly sized companies.
The paper added that the price that advertisers are willing to pay for search keywords has fallen.

64 is the new 32

by Salman Siddiqui

Looking into the future, we will ship Longhorn (the next version of Windows Server) in the second half of next year, and we will ship a 32-bit and a 64-bit version. That will be the last time we ship a 32-bit version. From that point, the next release, which will be roughly two years later, that product will only be available as 64-bit.
This is what MS server honcho Bog Muglai has to say indicating the future of 32 bit technology. Servers finally looking to shift completely to 64 bit tech. How about the desktop systems?

The need isnt there for the common computer user to die for 64 bit but for junkies, we always need more, hmmm!
The real barrier to wider adoption of 64-bit technology isn't hardware or the OS. It's the lack of compelling software. On the server side, there are great reasons to move to 64-bit technology for scaling databases and handling massive numbers of transactions. But where are the equivalent challenges for desktop users? With the exception of people running workstation-class video editing systems, who needs a 64-bit system?

Email turns 35

by Salman Siddiqui

BELIEVE it or not, the email has just turned 35.

IT programmer Ray Tomlinson sent the first message in late 1971.

"The test messages were entirely forgettable and I have, therefore, forgotten them. Most likely the first message was QWERTYUIOP or something similar," he says.

And now, 35 years on, we'd be completely lost without the joys of emailing!

Study: Oracle database software has more flaws than SQL Server

Sunday, November 26, 2006 by Salman Siddiqui

Micro$oft is often unfairly slammed for security issues, says NGSS
Time to change gears for oracle. As usual the biggest threat in the IT market is striking on Oracle too. And it is not Micro$oft who is saying this but its the survey!

A comparison of vulnerabilities in Microsoft's SQL Server database and Oracle's relational database management (RDBM) products by U.K.-based Next Generation Security Software (NGSS) shows the latter's products to have far more vulnerabilities than do products from Microsoft.
Between December 2000 and November 2006, external researchers discovered 233 vulnerabilities in Oracle's products compared to 59 in Microsoft's SQL Server technology, according to NGSS. The study looked at vulnerabilities that were reported and fixed in SQL Server 7, 2000 and 2005 and Oracle's database versions 8, 9, and 10g.

NASA Will Develop a Video Game at Your Expense

by Salman Siddiqui

NASA-the guys who fly to Mars and stuff- will, apparently, develop a video game of their own. And they will do this at your expense, to be more exact, they will take money out of your taxes.

According to beyondunreal.com, NASA's Learning Technologies Office got some money to develop a NASA-based game. For the time being, they are planning to develop a prototype game, which will last about 10 to 20 minutes. They are collaborating with America's Army development team and the Federation of American Scientists and they will use Epic's Unreal 3 engine.

Trough this game’s prototype, they plan to make people more familiar with space exploration, and introduce them into NASA’s Vision for Space Exploration. NASA has big plans for the future, their goal being to go back to the moon by 2025, and to get a human on Mars by 2035.

Can a Manager Be a Techie and Survive?

BOSS! The word mostly been produced as "bad man sort of" by the media is now under test. Should a manager have technical skills? As far as I am concerned, Yes! Else it would not be the manager who would be running the organisation but the employers.

"If you don't know the difference between fiction and reality, you've got a problem. By being technically informed while managing people and projects, no one can blow smoke up my skirt. I can tell the difference between a lame excuse for a delay and a legitimate reason why something can't be done."

Mark Shuttleworth invites OpenSUSE developers to join Ubuntu

by Salman Siddiqui

Now jobs are being offered via mailing lists and that too in the "open-source" field!

Mark Shuttleworth, the wealthy patron of the Ubuntu Linux distribution, sent an e-mail to the OpenSUSE mailing list on Friday in an attempt to recruit disgruntled OpenSUSE developers and convince them to join the Ubuntu project. The OpenSUSE project is funded by Novell, a company that recently evoked the wrath of many open source software contributors by making a controversial patent indemnification agreement with Microsoft.

In his message, Shuttleworth describes Novell's recent deal with Microsoft as a "decision to go to great lengths to circumvent the patent framework clearly articulated in the GPL" and argues that "the position taken by Novell leadership in their contract with Microsoft is hugely disrespectful of the contributions of thousands of GPL programmers and contributors to SuSE." Shuttleworth then states that "Ubuntu is one option, as are Gentoo, Debian and other communities," for developers that "are looking for a new place to get involved that is not subject to the same arbitrary executive intervention." The e-mail also includes information about Ubuntu Open Week, an upcoming event intended to provide information about the Ubuntu community for new prospective members.

Domain Names In Your Local Language

Wednesday, November 22, 2006 by Salman Siddiqui

ICANN's (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.) roadmap for IDNs shows that a workable system should be ready by the end of 2007, with live root zone tests to be conducted in December 2006. The group has already contracted with a Swedish firm named Autonomica to do lab testing of the new system, which is currently underway. ICANN has actually been developing the IDN system for three years, leading us to believe that their timetable has a good chance of being met. If you've been holding out on that new domain registration until you could have it in Hindi, you've only got a year left to wait.

Yahoo into food business!

by Salman Siddiqui

In the wake of Google’s recent purchase of Youtube, lauded by analysts as a brilliant move in furthering Google’s control over internet media, Yahoo has come up with its own idea: Yahoo! Food. What exactly are they thinking?

Yahoo has been under a lot of pressure from investors as its share of the search market slips more and more each quarter, contributing to a plummeting stock price that is already down 34% this year. How a food site will compensate for Yahoo’s deficit in its core function – search – is a mystery.

“People go to Yahoo for four things: search, news, e-mail, and finance” says search engine analyst Evan Bailyn. “Cooking recipes aren’t one of those things. And even if Yahoo has somehow hit upon something big with this food site, you know Google will just come out with a better version in six months."

Yahoo's Future

Tuesday, November 21, 2006 by Salman Siddiqui

“Yahoo touches one out of every two people on the Internet every month, which is unparalleled reach. Despite the fact that Yahoo actually has more traffic than Google, Google has more revenue. So there definitely is a problem with Yahoo’s monetization."

“The main problem is that Yahoo has not been nearly as good as Google at reaping profits from the huge volume of search traffic it attracts. Yahoo’s search revenue in the third quarter was $191 million, versus $911 million for Google. The industry’s growth rate is catching up with Yahoo’s in this area. When someone’s growth rate is declining, it’s hard to know where the bottom is. Still, Wall Street’s worries about this seem overdone, creating a buying opportunity at the beginning of a traditionally strong holiday period for the Internet” Justin Post, a Merrill Lynch analyst in San Francisco, said.

Did you get any such mail from google? It is not fake, that is a new adsense feature being introduced by google, but they are selecting few of there customers to test the feature for them.

Ask a deeply religious Christian if he’d rather live next to a bearded Muslim that may or may not be plotting a terror attack, or an atheist that may or may not show him how to set up a wireless network in his house.I think that in an election cycle or two you will see an atheist business leader emerge as a legitimate candidate for president. When you do so and then click Connect for free, Google will call your number almost immediately. Pick up, and you'll hear ringing on the other end as Google connects you to the business you selected. Banglore to Bengalooru - huh!

by Salman Siddiqui

Where will Mr. Gates be going now? Bangalore is finally been deleted from official Indian map. The image shown on the right is taken from wikipedia and that too shows the new name Bengalooru (this is the correct spelling. Not Bengaluru).

But see this, while I write this post even the spell check here is asking me to change the name Bengalooru to Bangalore as it this poor guys is not being run by the sweet Indian politicians!

Strange things are happening to our cities in the last two decades. Our cities are booming. Making a great leap towards a 'great ' future. Or at least our media reports say so.

Ironically our cities are going back to their original ' Indian ' or ' local 'names from their ' Anglicized ' names. Bombay said good-bye to its stylish name and went back to its local name Mumbai, more than a decade back. Calcutta became Kolkata and Madras became Chennai.

A great sense of fulfillment and satisfaction for the pro- Kannada organizations and personalities, who fought for it. Is it going to serve any other purpose? Certainly not.

Its good to love your culture but not to "please" mix that with politics too.

Please do write your comments to this post if you care even a little for India!

If your internet plan has restricted bandwidth limit per month and the ISP is charging you per MB of data exchanged after a certain threshold is exceeded, you should install a bandwidth monitoring software that will track your internet usage behind the scenes and inform you before you hit that monthly data download/upload limit.
Not just internet usage, these programs assist you diagnose slow internet connections and whether the ISP is giving your the promised speed or not. You also get an idea about what processes or software are currently downloading or uploading data to the internet. One of the favorite bandwidth monitor software is Net Meter - it's absolutely free, requires no configuration and it's features match that of pro software like DUMeter or Bandwidth Monitor pro.
The data is displayed inside graphs and you get an accurate idea about the true data upload speed, download speed and since how long have you been online.
Net Meter has live reports about data transferred in a day, week or the whole month. This can also be exported in text file so that you can tally the report from your ISP.
If you are on dial-up connection, RAS Monitor - a standalone program [no installation] that you can add to your Windows startup folder, is recommended. It will reside in the Windows System tray and as soon as you switch on the modem or plug in the cable connection, RAS will begin tracking your data transfer usage.
So you can finally stop worrying about exceeding your monthly internet bandwidth or those unexpected and shocking internet usage bills that sometimes made no sense to you.

18 months and 4 seconds of Windows Vista start up sound

by Salman Siddiqui

Microsoft Corp took 18 months to find the right tune for Windows Vista’s start up sound, and the soft da-dum with a lush fade last a mere 4 seconds. Reminds me of Windows 95’s ’start me up tune’ by Rolling Stones. It was believed that Microsoft paid millions for the right to use rolling stone’s few seconds of tune on Windows 95 - rumors, but this time around, Vista’s tune which took 18 months is definitely a million dollar tune.

Yahoo's Instant Messaging to merge with its mail box.

by Salman Siddiqui

During 90's yahoo was the leader in IMs. But these days the IM industry has seen a drift into others like Google. Yahoo's melding of e-mail and instant messaging follows the lead of rival Google Inc, which merged its Google Talk instant-message chat service with its Gmail e-mail program. But Yahoo's audience is roughly 10 times larger than Google's base of e-mail users, according to industry data.

Yahoo Mail, which counts 250 million active monthly users, plans in coming months to incorporate the Yahoo Messenger instant-messaging program inside the e-mail service, Yahoo executive Brad Garlinghouse said.

Can't find something in Google?

by Salman Siddiqui

There are some questions that can't be answered by Google. - City TV spotted this unique Claude Presbyterian Church billboard in Orangeville.

My two cents here - When you can't find something on Google, modify your search queries and if that doesn't work, there's also a website Can't find on Google by Wayne Radinsky where you can post your search queries that did not show satisfactory results in Google Search. Other readers on this site will help you find what you are looking for.

So what you call this,"Google's Daddy!"

Its just an alternative if you have patience to wait for your answers.

Google Talk + Orkut

Tuesday, November 07, 2006 by Salman Siddiqui

Finally Google is integrating both there Google Talk with Orkut. This is a very good move for orkut, I’ve yet to give it a try but from what I heard is that Orkut in Brazil means “a place where people meet and have sex.” Maybe that is why Orkut is so popular in Brazil and failed miserably else where.

The company says its Google Talk and Orkut development teams are busy putting the finishing touches on the integration. The announcement will likely be made sometime next week. […]
“We noticed that a lot of people that were using Orkut also had their GTalk client open at the same time,” says Google spokeswoman Courtney Hohne.

Poor friendster, it seems like they should have taken up Google's offer long time ago. Well, it is never too late, maybe Google will approach them again in the future.
